Casa Tait

The legacy of William Tait

Bought in 1900 by William Tait, a port wine merchant with a great fortune, Casa Tait is protected by high walls, it has a privileged panoramic view over the Douro River, and takes us back to other times through its aesthetics. English families have lived here and there are certain characteristics that have never been lost.

William Tait was dedicated to the study of fauna and flora, and the gardens of this house demonstrate his passion. Among many species, a tulip tree stands out - its scientific name is Liriodendron tulipifera - which enchants the visitors.

With free access, the gardens are great for a walk and the house building often receives temporary exhibitions of different artists, inserted in different styles, concepts and themes. Casa Tait now belongs to the City Council, which promotes and cares to preserve the desire of Muriel Tait, successor of William Tait (the first owner), who contributed to the cultural development of the city and who only sold it on the condition that it would be transformed into a public green space.

His desire has been fulfilled and Casa Tait promotes a quiet walk in touch with Nature.

Cool Tip: It was thanks to Port Wine that William Tait started his life in Portugal - how about, after the visit, you leave to enjoy this typical drink? You're in the perfect city to do it!
