PORTO BOTANICAL GARDEN

TRANQUILITY IN THE CITY

The Porto Botanical Garden is located at Quinta do Campo Alegre and, together with the Biodiversity Gallery at Casa Andresen, is a natural nook, where biology and natural history walk side by side.

Its origins date back to 1837, but only in the 1950s did it become property of the University of Porto, which developed an area of about 4 hectares, where various species of plants from different parts of the world transform it into a true paradise of biodiversity.

Porto Botanical Garden is divided into three levels that surround a manor house, once the residence of the Andresen family and where the writer Sophia de Mello Breyner played and got inspiration for some of her works.

The incredible façade of the Casa Andresen welcomes us, the starting point for a moment of tranquility and contact with nature. We move on to the formal gardens, which include a rose garden and the Jardim dos Jotas (entitled in honor of its creators Joana and João Andresen), separated by tall hedges of camellias, some of the oldest in Portugal. We continue and find a garden of cacti and succulents, where there are two greenhouses. At the last level, we are welcomed by the magnificent forest, where we discover the largest lake in the garden.

The Porto Botanical Garden stands out for its natural and historical richness, and for the romantic side with which it welcomes all visitors. The ideal place to enjoy a moment with family, a special moment for two or for all those seeking a refuge from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Cool Tip: We recommend a visit to the Biodiversity Gallery, a space that offers a range of experiences that stimulate all the senses. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday, between 10 am and 6 pm.
