Museu do Vinho do Porto

To discover one of Porto's ex libris

In a restored warehouse on Rua da Reboleira, the Museu do Vinho do Porto (Port Wine Museum) occupies four floors and presents us with a permanent exhibition related to “the government of the city and the wine”.

The suggested route takes place around three categories of municipal officers who have dealt with wine over the centuries: “vereadores” (town councilors), “almotacés” (weights and measures inspectors) and “aferidores” (responsible for the weights and measures). As we go through the various floors, we realize that the Port wine trade has always been linked to the economic, social and cultural development of the city and the region, therefore, the display of this relationship in a museum dedicated to wine would be inevitable and necessary. After all, the theme of the museum is “The Government of the City and the Wine”.

Through interactive exhibitions, Museu do Vinho do Porto presents the impact that the trade and the consumption of this drink have had on the development of the region. In addition, we're invited to explore the maps drawn by Baron Forrester, the measures used in the wine trade, the historical documents, the techniques and equipment used to make wine over the years. Artistic reproductions of the “Rabelo” boats, porcelain pieces, furniture and an interactive board with a large amount of information are also present, as well as paintings, engravings and metals.

It's along four floors that, in the historical center of Porto - World Heritage, Museu do Vinho do Porto reveals every detail of the product's history. If you wish to know more about this wine, justifiably famous around the world, this is the place you must visit.

Cool Tip: In the basement, overlooking the Douro River, is a small terrace belonging to the museum's wine-bar. There's no better way to end the visit than to enjoy a good glass of Port wine while watching time going by.
